Our animations depict a number of actions, including running, jumping, throwing and kicking. Scrambling the starting positions of each joint destroys the spatial and temporal relationships between the dots. The result is a cluster of dots with an overall "flow" in common, but no sense of biological-ness.
   

Please note: in the experiment the point-light animations consisted of black dots against a gray background.

 

We measured neural activity using fMRI while observers watched biological motion animations. We found a region on the posterior superior temporal sulcus (posterior STS) to be selective to the biological animations.
