The following are recent examples of the vision in vivo approach and will be presented at a scheduled

laboratory meeting of the Vision Sciences Lab of Harvard University on Tuesday, December 14th.

Gas station canopies

An increasingly common architectural entity is the horizontal metal form used to shield gas station pumps

from inclement weather. Typically the canopies are rectangular and supported by 2 or more vertical

columns of equal height. Our perception of the canopy and columns is generally veridical. However, an

interesting exception is a Sunoco station located in Clifton, NJ. where the actual shape of the canopy is not

rectangular. The erroneous perception of the canopy shape seems to have consequences for the

misperception of the height of the columns.

Seeing time

Several Manhattan clocks will be used to understand the perceptual/cognitive processes involved in

everyday time telling.
